Text
I am influenced by the use of text in Victorian-era Mourning Art. Mourning Art's symbolism and function are ripe for re-interpretation in the 21st century. The use of text in my artwork shares similarities to Mourning Art. Text becomes a primary compositional and contextual element. Instead of autobiographical information, I incorporate queer slang, cultural references, and original writing. I edit my writing voice to allow contemporaneity, emotion, and meaning. I want to make the text both personal to my experience and referential to a larger audience.
