Sculpture

My art practice is centered on fabric and thread but I am aware of the sculptural considerations in needlework and textile art.  Like bas relief, embroidery forms a raised area when applied to fabric or paper. Fabric has a three-dimensional fluidity that other materials lack. My interest in the sculptural qualities of textiles and thread has grown.

My recent series of large-scale sculptures center around the idea of supernature. My sculpture, Code Ghost, utilizes 100 bandanas. The bandana is a powerful symbol in queer culture. In the 20th century, gay men wore bandanas when cruising for sex. The bandana hung from the back pocket and their colors were code for sexual practices. In Code Ghost, I used bandanas to construct a phantasm.  It is a memorial to the dead and speaks of the erosion of gay culture since the ascendence of HIV/AIDS."
