As curator and manager of ESP Gallery (1996-2000), my intentions were simple: to share a sunny storefront at 305 Valencia Street with San Francisco’s emerging artists and allow them access to exhibition space. ESP’s exhibition history is an account of a visual art community’s creative practices during California’s most recent, world renown art movement, The Mission School. Documentation of those alternative, independent, S.F. galleries seems scarce compared to our ability to document daily lives today. The images seen here represent a small portion of the hundreds of art shows presented by artist-run galleries and non-profit art spaces in San Francisco during that time.
